First French-language edition and first translation from the Persian of The History of the Prophets and Kings, an Arabic-language historical chronicle written by Al-Tabari - spanning history from the Creation to AD and covering Muslim and middle-eastern history.

Tabari is described by the Encyclopaedia Iranica as "one of the most eminent scholars the early Abbasid era, author of a celebrated commentary on the Qor'an as well as the most important of the classical Arabic historical texts still extant. Complete with author's dedication and page introduction.

Large quarto, three-quarter green morocco over patterned boards. Marbled endpapers. Text in French with frequent insets in Arabic. Bound between the half-title and the title page is a page printed abstract from the Journal des Savants issue of May , giving a favorable review of this work.

Dubeux - was a noted linguist and teacher, initially with a position at the French Royal Library, during which period he mastered 22 languages and dialects from Europe and the east, and later as a teacher at the French School of Modern Oriental Languages. His translation of the Chronique is seen as his most important work. A very good copy, with the spine uniformly faded to tan and with light scuffing to the joints and raised bands on the spine.

Some very light scattered foxing, but generally a sound, clean copy. An important work, rare inscribed. From: Peter Harrington. London, United Kingdom. Large quarto x mm. Original green cloth, printed paper label to spine as issued, binder's ticket of W. Runting, Chancery lane to front pastedown. Scattered light cockling to cloth, heavier on the spine, spine label a little chipped, corners bumped, a few pale markings to sides, small portion of cloth worn away midway along front joint, small spot to fore edge, a little pale foxing towards front and rear, else internally crisp, fresh and almost entirely unopened.

A very good copy. Frequent Arabic types. Engraved presentation leaf printed in purple with foliate border. Dubeux's text, based on the AD Persian translation by Samanid vizier Bal'ami, covers the period from the creation of the world to the time of Biblical prophet Shu'ayb. One of the first works published by the Oriental Translation Fund, the translation was not completed until the edition in four volumes by Hermann Zotenberg, published Tabari was one of the most eminent scholars of the early 'Abbasid era.

Born in Amol, present-day Iran, he followed the custom of the time and visited the various intellectual centres of the Islamic east, including Basrah, Kufah, and Rayy, before eventually settling in Baghdad. Although learned in jurisprudence and hadith, he is remembered chiefly for his immense Qur'anic commentary and his Ta'rikh: "both are notable for their comprehensiveness and their meticulous citation of multiple and often conflicting sources, presumably in order to bring out their differences in accounts and interpretations, though not always especially in the history attempting to resolve them" ibid.
