Series A Statistics in Society. This content downloaded from The author states that the 'math phobia' of some medical professionals has been taken into consider. Even though true avoid ance of mathematical intricacy might be debated by some, the formulae or equations are presented in a way that the reader who chooses to avoid them. However, readers who are keen on the 'fancy math.

The final chapter of the book on 'Statistical falla cies' is very informative and promotes awareness on. The entire book generates and emphasizes the important notion that 'a statistically significant result may not have any medical significance'.

As the author rightly states 'correct statistics tell nothing but the truth' but also that interpretation 'lies with the user' and it is this that this book aims to clarify.

This book should be of interest to readers look ing for an introduction as well as guidance in medi cal biostatistics concepts and applications. I would recommend it as a comprehensive reference for. This book provides the details and a very readable discussion on the theory of linear models. It cov ers the topics for a Master's level course for statis.

The way of presentation, depth of discussion, clearly spelled out explana tions, detailed derivation of results, logical devel opment of topics and easy-to-understand language make it an excellent text on linear models.

The book has nine chapters starting with some brief examples on various topics of general linear models like regression models, analysis of variance, nested models, analysis of covariance and auto. Thus the first four chapters in the book are devoted to aspects of estimation in linear models whereas the next four chapters concern mainly tests of hypoth eses and confidence interval estimation in linear.

Chapters 6 and 7 present a detailed dis cussion on testing general linear hypotheses, the likelihood ratio test, confidence interval estimation and orthogonal polynomials in fixed effects mod els. Chapter 8 details statistical inferences in lin ear mixed effects models. When a linear model has multiple response variables then the issues that are related to a multivariate version of the Gauss.

Lastly, there is an appendix summarizing results on linear algebra and Lagrange multipliers along with proofs and discussion with examples. All the chapters are expertly and scholarly deliv ered. As the author points out, an advantage of this book over other texts on this topic is that he has used the set-up of a non-full rank design matrix through out the book. The chapters are supplemented with summaries of important results and notes which.

Some elementary examples are pre sented for the understanding of terms, notation and. Statistical Issues in Drug Development, 2nd edn S. This book is in Wiley's 'Statistics in practice' series. As it is a second edition I shall begin with a brief overview for the benefit of those who are not famil iar with the original, and then go on to highlight the main changes from the first edition.

The book is almost solely concerned with matters affecting. However, although this book is clearly aimed at people with responsibilities for the design or analysis of clinical trials, many of the underlying issues discussed are sufficiently gen eral to be relevant to many other application areas.

Part 1 consists of four chapters which briefly cover statistics in clinical drug devel opment from the historical, methodological, tech nical and professional perspectives. Part 2 of the book consists of 20 chapters, each subdivided into two parts: the first briefly introducing the subject; the second discussing various issues and controver. It is this part of the book that differentiates it from most other statistics texts, and it is where the real value lies. Topics that are covered here in clude, among others, allocating treatments to pa.

In the preface to this second edition, Senn pro vides graphs showing the additional length of each chapter compared with the original; excluding the wholly new chapter on pharmacogenetics, the mean increase per chapter is just over words. So, purely from a quantity perspective, this is a sub stantial change. The major changes come in part 2 of the book, with most of the chapters here having substantial additions. As well as covering issues that have come more to the fore in the 10 years since the first edition, many of the topics that were covered previously have been updated with references to recent publications.

One of the important features. Senn's views are often quite tightly argued, which, although enabling many issues to be covered in relatively few pages, does lead to much rereading to ensure that the points are understood. This also makes some sections less robust to the occasional typograph ical errors that inevitably slip through the edito rial process. However, this is nearly always time well spent as the book is sharing the expertise of someone who has not only thought very long and hard about these issues but also has the practical experience of addressing them while designing and analysing real studies.

As with the first edition, Senn has lightened the read with the occasional joke or anecdote; a nice feature that is not overdone. On the back cover the blurb states the hope that. Unfortunately, I believe that only the most statisti cally literate of the life scientists I know will find the book accessible.

However, for those with the moti vation, this book is definitely the best place to start. As for statisticians, this should be required reading for anyone considering or starting out on a career. However, readers who are keen on the 'fancy math ematics' behind the theory can benefit from these parts. The final chapter of the book on 'Statistical falla cies' is very informative and promotes awareness on several topics that inevitably arise in biostatistical studies. I would recommend it as a comprehensive reference for health and medical professionals. It cov ers the topics for a Master's level course for statis tics students and is also useful as a reference book for background reading.

The book has nine chapters starting with some brief examples on various topics of general linear models like regression models, analysis of variance, nested models, analysis of covariance and auto regression. Chapter 2 introduces some basic con cepts, e. Chapter 3 addresses the esti mability of least squares estimators and related issues. Chapter 4 discusses parameter estimation under Gauss-Markov and Aitken models. Thus the first four chapters in the book are devoted to aspects of estimation in linear models whereas the next four chapters concern mainly tests of hypoth eses and confidence interval estimation in linear models.

When a linear model has multiple response variables then the issues that are related to a multivariate version of the Gauss Markov model, e. The chapters are supplemented with summaries of important results and notes which provide more details on the results that are used in the chapters. Some elementary examples are pre sented for the understanding of terms, notation and algebra. Exercises are provided in each chapter as well as in the appendix. Readers without a strong background in mathematics and statistics may find the book difficult but it will certainly appeal to stu dents and instructors of statistics working in courses on linear models.

Topics that are covered here in clude, among others, allocating treatments to pa tients, demographic subgroups, multiplicity, one sided and two-sided tests, determining the sample size, crossover trials, sequential trials, dose finding and bioequivalence.

One of the important features of this book is the excellent list of references at the end of each chapter that enable one easily to dig deeper into a particular topic of interest. On the back cover the blurb states the hope that '
