Edited by Gerry Canavan. Eckart Voigts and Alessandra Boller, eds. Trier: Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier, Perhaps not quite so significant for utopian studies, Metamorphoses was nonetheless a crucially important text here too. Canavan, Suvin, the Ralahine editorial collective, and Peter Lang are all to be congratulated, then, on producing what is almost certainly the most important Ralahine volume to date.

Suvin is literally correct, but Plaice, Plaice, and Knight reads much better, if only because, as a hybrid between aristocratic Norman French and peasant Anglo-Saxon, the English language normally dignifies titles, whether of books or of people, with Romance rather than Germanic genitives.

It is a minor technical point, I know, but perhaps worth making. Project MUSE promotes the creation and dissemination of essential humanities and social science resources through collaboration with libraries, publishers, and scholars worldwide.

This is a book I've long made good use of, even prior to actually reading the whole thing all the way through, I would often lean on Suvin's definition of science fiction, a definition that like the Darko Suvin. Returning to print for the first time since the s, Metamorphoses of Science Fiction is the origin point for decades of literary and theoretical criticism of science fiction and related genres. Suvin's centuries-spanning history of the genre links SF to a long tradition of utopian and satirical literatures crying out for a better world than this one, showing how SF and the imagination of utopia are now forever intertwined. In addition to the text of the book, this edition contains three additional essays from Suvin that update, expand and reconsider the terms of his original intervention, as well as a new introduction and preface that situate the book in the context of the decades of SF studies that have followed in its wake.
