A flashback to the election manifesto release by the DMK justifies the importance being given to the DMK patriarch's announcement of the same. Karunanidhi, in a single press conference ahead of the state elections, had suddenly changed the course of the polls by announcing free colour television sets for all and rice.

But as the news sunk in, it became clear that with one master stroke, the DMK had in fact swung elections in its favour. The then union finance minister P Chidambaram had remarked that the DMK manifesto was the hero of elections. Although, there was strong anti-incumbency against the ruling DMK then and the AIADMK was loo king set for a comfortable victory in the polls, it made sure the manifesto did not lack sheen.

A team comprising representatives from various sections including finance and IT services have been providing inputs for the AIADMK manifesto, while the DMK's manifesto team spearheaded by Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has been collating inputs from all senior party functionaries and party workers for months now. No major issue stands out which is new to this election.

The alliance formed by the DMK, apart from the manifesto promising colour televisions for all, set the tone during polls. Jayalalithaa was gearing up for election campaigns where she planned to list out her achievements to impress the people for them to vote her back. She had taken up various development schemes during her regime and a feather in her cap was the successful handling of the tsunami. A decade later, experts say both parties seem to be heading again to a closely-fought polls that could go any way and are lik ely to come out with the best ideas jotted down in their mani festos.

Sources, however, added that despite the announcement, the DMK may not release the manifesto so early as there was a good two months to go for polls and laying their cards out in the open at this point could only be counterproductive.
