Regarding the COV virus and its effects: Things are frustrating, and confusing, and scary. People dream up conspiracy theories to help make sense of things. They're not helpful, though, and only serve to make the world more confusing and scarier. We're not going to have that here. And we swear to God, if anyone comes in here and starts spouting off QAnon bullshit about COVID or literally anything else, you are going to get permabanned so thoroughly that your grandchildren won't be allowed to post here.

Thread starter Bomberg Start date Aug 11, Bomberg Registered User Validated User. Ulisses' announcement to translate led to a rather active thread see here. This led me to not only get the new rulebook to feed my rpg-buying compulsion as soon as possible and read it with an eye to possibly run it in the future, but also to see how this game might in the interneational market.

What came before First, a bit of personal history. One of the players, a then friend of mine, asked me for a birthday present for another one who wouldn't be happy with an English game. So I referred him DSA and asked him to let me examine it before he wrapped it. When the game became more complex and its world Aventurien devloped its own style and the concept of living history, it slowly returned to my notice.

And when my wife showed interest in running a game herself using German language products and published scenarios we bought some DSA 3 stuff and played a campaign with it. I stopped following it again for more than 10 years. Now the time for re-visiting DSA has come What Meets the Eye The first impression of the book is a good one: 2 kg, an attractive dark cover, full-colour throughout, pages, 2 ribbons as bookmarks.

I understand that the cover of my copy is a special one. It is part glossy, part matt; I haven't seen the usual one. Prominent figure on the cover is a woman being fascinated by an apparently magical orb. Her companions are either busy in the shadows searching the room or watching her with folded arms.

Nothing I would want to hang on my walls, but well-done and pretty atmospheric. Decoration of the page area is conservative with decent background. Page margins are darker in colour but don't run into the text area. The Text is set in two columns without much whitespace. It is broken up by three different types of boxes: one type for marginal notes white text on dark background , one for optional rules standard text in line box with white on dark green heading , and one for explanations standard text on parchment-like background.

Filler art is used sparsely, like every two pages. Most of the artwork uses the same style. It shows a single person with correct body proportions. You won't see a barbarian with bulging muscles and a pound-sword jumping at his enemy with his mouth wide open. It's rather normal looking people in everyday poses.

The drawings are pretty realistic. Colours are a saturated, pretty much like those drawings in biology books which should transport a clear image of a plant or animal. Other pieces differ in style without looking too odd. The book sports a table of contents with one level of subheadings, an appendix with index, a collection of tables an luckily a list of abbreviations.

You know, we Germans love abbreviations! Just reading the first 30 pages or so I already used this feature a lot. Only 10 pages of bestiary? Well, thumbing through it I count three demons, two elementals, two regular animals and three animal companions for witches. I'm looking forward for the reasoning, especially as up to now no monster book seems to be announced.

Okay, got some work to do. Join me soon for a discussion of the first two chapters! Zehnseiter Registered User Validated User. Bomberg said:. Zehnseiter has it right: The Almanach will be the book for history, creatures and a selection of "typical" NPCs.

Which is kind of a shame, really. I had wished it to be nearer to the release of the core, as it means that newbies starting the game are kind of let in the dark a great deal.

The new core is a MUCH better core than 4 and 4. It offers everything you need to play in a much better degree than the last two editions, but it's too light on setting and background. There is some, interspersed through examples and inside the descriptions of the ready-to-play archetypes, as well as the species and cultures.

It's bare bones. It's no big problem for me, as I have over two decades of stuff and books to draw from. But I do feel for newer players. It is a very damn solid and great book, though. The Beta phase hepled a lot. The rules are tight. They flow quickly. I love the fate point addition.

I love the "statuses" and how they helped get rid of "Ausdauer" I started playing DSA in Not a single group I played it with used the damn Ausdauer rules. They were needlessly fiddly and complicated since they were introduced. I'm very happy with my purchase. So most of us got the bookmarks and sticker and adventure extras from F-Shop. I have no doubt that there are still some kinks to work out, but I haven't bee that happy with a DSA core since 3rd edition revised dropped, all those years ago.

My players love it, too. Which is always a good sign. I'm curious in a good way! Last edited: Aug 11, It meant that as soon as I got the core rules, they were on my dropbox account a few minutes after I opened the shrink wrap and entered the coupon code. And if you want just the PDF, it costs 9. Ceb said:. Although they got so many pre-orders, that they had to work some distributor magic to get at least some of those to RatCon customers, and were pretty quickly sold out on them there.

PDFs are universal. It is very shiny. I want one, said the guy who started a thread about how bad an idea this is from a commercial perspective. Probably do a campaign heavily influenced by my early DSA experiences, traumatizing any modern day DSA purist who comes near it. Really helps. The new editiorial staff really seems to know what they're doing. It feels like a true modern RPG while not pushing away its roots and influences. It's thankfully still not DnD and it retains the more "historic" feeling, while pushing the timeline forward.

But the "push forward" seems like it was well thought out this time, and it leads to a setting that is much more suited to adventuring in it than the last few years had.

More "local" stuff and less epic, region-sweeping campaigns. Man, I remember when the Orkensturm and Sieben Gezeichnete were epic, momentous, punctuating moments of the line.

Not something we got every few months, scope wise. I hope we get a few new ideas to run something like "Unter dem Adlerbanner" with the new rules and settings.

Es kann aber auch problemlos als one-shot verwendet werden. Rechtschreibfehler sind mir keine aufgefallen. Sehr aufschlussreich.
